Roter Veltliner

Roter Veltliner is a traditional Austrian white wine grape variety. Despite its name, a white wine is made from the reddish-colored grape skins.

Origin and meaning

  • Historical variety: It is considered one of the oldest grape varieties in Austria and is the parent variety of the entire Veltliner family (except for Grüner Veltliner, which is a natural cross).

  • Growing area: The main growing area is the Wagram in Lower Austria, where the variety develops its full quality on loess soils.

  • Rarity: Because the variety is demanding to cultivate and late-ripening, it is now only cultivated on comparatively small areas.

Characteristics of the wine

  • Taste: Roter Veltliner is known for its rich extract and complex structure. It often has a higher acidity than Grüner Veltliner.

  • Aromas: Typical aromas are those of ripe fruits (pear, quince) as well as nutty and honey-like notes with longer ripening.

  • Storage potential: High-quality specimens have a very good storage life.

Culinary accompaniment

Due to its richness and spiciness, it goes perfectly with:

  • Classic Austrian cuisine (e.g. Backhendl or Wiener Schnitzel).

  • Fish dishes and light meat.

  • Spicy cheeses.
