Native grape varieties play a major role in wine production. Italy has a total of 21 wine-growing regions. It begins in the north with South Tyrol, Friuli , Veneto , Trento, Lombardy , Aosta Valley, Piedmont , and Liguria. Central Italy includes Emilia-Romagna , Tuscany , Sardinia , Marche , Umbria, Lazio , Abruzzo , Molise, and Campania. In the south are the regions of Apulia , Basilicata, Calabria , and Sicily . Wine is also actively cultivated on the island of Sardinia .
